Carolina Mayda is a certified translator and conference interpreter from Córdoba, Argentina. She has been active in her field since completing her studies in 2002 at the School of Languages of the National University of Córdoba (UNC) – the first university in Latin-America to offer a training program for conference interpreters endorsed by the United Nations.

During her five-year undergraduate course, she completed modules in a wide array of subjects, including Linguistics; Phonetics and Phonology; Grammar; Terminology and Documentation; Linguistic History of English; Culture and Civilization of English speaking societies; Legal, Technical, Medical, Literary, Journalistic and Scientific Translation; and General Interpretation.

Since 2009, Carolina has served as an official translator and interpreter for various national and international organizations throughout several Latin American countries, including Brazil, where she would eventually add Portuguese to her repertoire.

In 2011 she moved to Salvador de Bahia, Brazil, where she continued her career all across the country. She currently lives in Rio de Janeiro.

Over a million words translated

In this type of translation, a text written in language A is read aloud by the interpreter in language B, in a manner in which the content of the document can be easily understood by the audience.

The interpreter waits for the speaker to finish a sentence or an idea, and then renders the speaker’s words in the target language. Carolina received training in note-taking and memory techniques that enables her to render passages of up to five minutes faithfully and accurately.

According to Professor Rainer Schulte, co-founder of ALTA, literary translation bridges the delicate emotional connections between cultures and languages, and furthers the understanding of human beings across national borders.

Audiences of simultaneous interpretation wear headphones while the interpreter renders the speaker’s words into the target language as he or she is speaking.
